Uptime
Definition
Uptime is the percentage of time a system is operational and available, usually measured in 'nines': 99% uptime allows up to 7.3 hours of downtime per month; 99.9% allows 43 minutes; 99.99% allows just 4 minutes.
Why it matters for your business
Every extra nine of uptime costs significantly more in infrastructure and redundancy. The goal isn't to maximize it at any cost, but to pick the right level based on what an hour of downtime actually costs your business.
