UniFi (Ubiquiti)
Managed WiFi and switching without per-device licensing
What it is
UniFi is Ubiquiti's networking ecosystem: access points, PoE switches, gateways, and cameras managed from a single console (the UniFi Network Controller, self-hosted or on Ubiquiti's cloud). Its core pitch is delivering enterprise-grade features — VLANs, captive portals, AP roaming, network analytics — without the per-device licensing cost other vendors require.
In practice, it's one of the most widely used ecosystems for mid-size professional WiFi deployments across Latin America and Europe, and a regular foundation for the projects our WiFiAtlas® division delivers.
When we recommend it
At DITAP we recommend UniFi when:
- A site needs solid WiFi coverage and centralized multi-site management, but the budget doesn't justify a traditional enterprise brand's recurring licensing.
- Guest, staff, and IoT networks need segmentation (typical in hospitality) with branded captive portals.
- The client values full control over the controller (self-hosted, not dependent on a third party keeping the cloud service running).
- The project combines WiFi, PoE switching, and cameras under a single management console, cutting down the number of systems to operate.
How we implement it
Our deployment process follows WiFiAtlas® methodology, not the vendor's default configuration:
- Site survey and heat mapping before a single access point goes up, so every AP is placed on real RF data, not visual guesswork.
- VLAN segmentation between management, guest, staff, and IoT networks, with firewall rules between segments.
- Branded captive-portal configuration where it applies (hotels, offices with frequent visitors).
- Ongoing controller monitoring and firmware updates as part of managed support, not a one-off installation task.
Alternatives
UniFi isn't the only option, and it isn't always the best fit. Alternatives we also implement:
Cisco Meraki
better factory-backed SLA support and stronger recognition in compliance audits, in exchange for mandatory licensing and a higher total cost.
MikroTik
more depth in routing and advanced network features, but with wireless management less polished than UniFi's.
TP-Link Omada
a cheaper entry-level alternative, with a smaller ecosystem and support community than Ubiquiti's.
