Satellite internet for sites without fiber or cable

What it is

Starlink is SpaceX's low-earth-orbit (LEO) satellite internet service, built to bring broadband connectivity to sites without fiber or cable access, with much lower latency than traditional geostationary satellites. Starlink integration is an explicit part of DITAP Core's infrastructure work for remote operations.

Starlink doesn't replace fiber where fiber is viable — we recommend it specifically when a traditional build-out isn't an option in the short term, or as a redundancy layer on top of a primary link.

When we recommend it

We recommend Starlink when:

  • The site is in a rural or remote area with no fiber or cable access — typical in oil & gas operations, rural hospitality, or construction sites.
  • Backup connectivity (failover) is needed for when the primary ISP goes down, without relying on a second physical line.
  • Traditional fiber deployment timelines are too long against the client's operational need.
  • Independence from a single last-mile provider is a priority at critical sites.
  • The site has limited power availability (solar panels, generator) and needs connectivity equipment with a predictable power draw.

How we implement it

Our Starlink implementation goes beyond mounting the dish:

  • Professional mounting and dish alignment, accounting for obstructions and the site's optimal orientation.
  • Integration into a multi-WAN architecture with automatic failover, coordinated with the site's main router or firewall.
  • Link monitoring as part of managed support, to catch degradation before it affects operations.
  • Efficient power management of the equipment, aligned with our approach to energy efficiency at remote sites.
  • Documented speed and latency testing before and after go-live, to establish a baseline reference.

Alternatives

Starlink isn't the only remote-connectivity solution we evaluate:

Point-to-point microwave links

a viable option when there's line of sight to a connected point, with less weather dependency than satellite.

4G/5G as backup

a cheaper failover alternative when the site's cellular coverage is reliable.

Traditional fiber

better bandwidth and long-term stability when deployment is technically and economically viable.
