Open-source on-premise virtualization, no per-core licensing
What it is
Proxmox VE is an open-source virtualization platform based on KVM (virtual machines) and LXC (containers), managed from a unified web interface, without the per-core licensing cost proprietary platforms require. It's the option we evaluate within DITAP Cloud when a client's infrastructure needs to stay on-premise or in a private-cloud model.
It has become a much more common request since proprietary hypervisor licensing got noticeably more expensive for smaller organizations.
When we recommend it
We recommend Proxmox when:
- The client wants to consolidate physical servers into a virtualized environment without taking on recurring public-cloud cost.
- Regulatory or business requirements demand keeping data and workloads physically on the client's premises.
- The client wants to cut spending on proprietary virtualization licensing, especially after changes to traditional vendors' licensing policies.
- High-availability clustering is needed across physical servers the client already owns, without relying on an external provider.
- The client already has underused physical servers and wants to consolidate them before investing in new hardware or public cloud.
How we implement it
Our Proxmox implementation includes:
- Server and rack sizing (compute, storage, network) based on the actual projected workload.
- Hypervisor installation and hardening, with separated management and production networks.
- Migration of virtual machines or containers from the client's previous platform.
- Integration with Proxmox Backup Server for automated backups, and clustering configuration for high availability when budget allows.
- Documentation of the VM topology and disaster-recovery plan, so maintenance doesn't depend on a single person on your team.
Alternatives
Proxmox doesn't always replace the traditional alternatives — depending on the case, we also work with:
VMware vSphere
a more mature ecosystem with broader compatibility with certified enterprise software, at a considerably higher licensing cost.
Hyper-V
a natural choice if the client already runs Windows Server licensing and prefers staying within the Microsoft stack.
Public cloud VMs (Azure/AWS)
a better fit when elasticity and scalability matter more than full control over the hardware.
