RTO/RPO
Definition
RTO (Recovery Time Objective) is the maximum acceptable time a system can stay down before the business suffers real damage. RPO (Recovery Point Objective) is the maximum amount of data, measured in time, you're willing to lose in an incident — the last hour of transactions, the last day of backups.
Why it matters for your business
Defining RTO and RPO per system, rather than a single number for the whole company, is what determines how much to invest in backup and redundancy: a system with a 15-minute RTO needs a completely different architecture than one that can wait 24 hours.
