What we recommend depending on your case:
- Any system the client considers critical to operations. The 3-2-1 strategy: at least 3 copies, on 2 different media, with 1 copy off-site (cloud). Don't pick just one model.
- A site with limited or unreliable internet connectivity. Prioritize local backup for fast recovery, with cloud replication during low-bandwidth-usage windows.
- A system with strict data-residency requirements in a specific jurisdiction. Local backup or cloud within that jurisdiction — never outside it without assessing the applicable legal framework.
- Need for protection against a disaster affecting the whole physical site (fire, flood, theft). Cloud backup is mandatory — local backup alone doesn't protect against this.
- A company just now formalizing its backup strategy, with nothing in place today. Start with automated cloud backup — fast to deploy — and add local backup as data volume grows.
